The Seeds of the Future Are in the Past

As a Shanghai museum dedicated to nostalgic Laozihao opens its doors, we celebrate our own histories as we imagine a future inspired by times past. In our view, ancient and modern are two sides to the same precious coin —and  both are legal tender.

We interview science-fashion company Vollebak who are planning to take the next great step forward in clothing, channeling childhood memories of running barefoot. We set a new course through time with Le Ponant, a thoroughly futuristic sailing ship. Our Objects of Desire take us to sheep farms in Hokkaido, Hong Kong artisan workshops, and some of Vancouver’s woodworking and painting studios. We investigate vintage interiors, the world of collectibles and Haute Joaillerie, and old-time Swiss banking. Then there are the places where memories are made — Vancouver’s new Michelin-starred restaurants.

The past is prologue, so the saying goes. What we do today shapes all our tomorrows. So let’s be intentional about our choices. Let’s promise our future selves that we will take care of now. Let’s make Newstalgia.
